During the summer months, from July to late September, York University also offers a range of inexpensive accommodation, although these are mainly single rooms, with some twins and also university flats. A number of the university colleges and other buildings provide self-catering holiday lets, including Alcuin College, Halifax College, Wentworth College, Fairfax House and St. Lawrence Court, allowing use of the college restaurants and cafés.

For budget travellers and backpackers visiting York, budget accommodation includes the York YHA Hostel along Water End, and the York Youth Hotel on Bishophill Senior. A camping ground can also be found on Terry Avenue, close to the River Ouse, just a short walk from York Train Station.
The most desirable hotels in York stand in the heart of the city centre, close to York Minster and the city's many other central attractions. Hotels and accommodation in central York are just a short walk from a vast selection of restaurants and shops. Slightly outside of the city walls, hotels in the Bootham area of York tend to be less expensive than those with a view of the Minster.
